Description
The basic exercise in pole work is the pole row, in which several poles are laid out parallel to each other at a certain distance. Depending on the level of the horse's training, a small number of poles is started and then slowly increased. The distance between the poles depends on the gait, the size of the horse, the space grip and the training goal. The following distances are a guideline for pole work with an average warmblood:
- walk: 80 cm
- trot: 110-130 cm
- canter: 240-350 cm
Tips and hints
When working with poles, the horse should be ridden in a stretched position at a calm and steady pace. The horse should always have the opportunity to look at the poles while slightly lowering his head. After the horse has mastered the rows of poles with distances adapted to the natural rhythm of movement, they can be varied: with longer distances can be worked on the space handle, with shorter distances on the assembly. Irregular distances in the bar rows promote the horse's attention and concentration and also train the feeling for the positioning of the hooves. Additionally, the poles can be slightly raised on one or both sides.Training goal
The pole work brings variety to the training and promotes the horse's attention and concentration. The hind legs are lifted much higher and the hind legs are lifted much higher, thus activating the hindquarters. The horse's back is arched up and loosened. In addition, the permeability is increased and tact and looseness are promoted.
